The modern day Butler is well educated, mature, experienced and versatile. He is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the household which usually extends to recruitment and training. He is expected to fulfil a various combination of functions which may include supervision of all household staff, maintaining household budgets and inventories along with booking flights, hotel and theatre tickets. He is responsible for guest liaison and care together with managing contractors, suppliers and services. Not only is he extremely well versed in formal service and social etiquette but he is also highly practical. Often he is responsible for the maintenance of the wine cellar and bar, along with the care and cleaning of silver and fine china. His duties frequently extend to meal planning, and preparation of formal table settings.
